Pakistan gets re-elected to UN committee for three years with overwhelming majority

 



An overwhelming majority of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) re-elected Pakistan to the agency's Program and Coordination Committee (CPC) after 52 of the 54 members voted to retain Pakistan as a member.

"This overwhelming support constitutes 96% of the total count," read a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.

"Pakistan's re-election to the CCP is a resounding validation of Pakistan's significant engagement within the United Nations, as well as its contributions in the areas of international economic cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," he added.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the committee functions as the "main subsidiary body of ECOSOC and the United Nations General Assembly for planning, programming, and coordinating the work of the United Nations."

In addition, the CCP is tasked with reviewing UN programs and recommending to the UN Secretary-General how "legislative mandates" can be translated into "programmatic activities," the statement said.

He pointed out that Pakistan has been a member of the committee comprising 34 countries since 1973 and with this re-election, he will serve for another three years, from 2021 to 2023.

"Pakistan's presence on the Committee will help us contribute to the effective formulation of United Nations programs and budget planning," the Foreign Ministry said.

The statement further noted that Pakistan also currently serves as the chair of ECOSOC at the United Nations "which is one of the main organs of the UN and the central platform for economic and social development, forging consensus and coordinating efforts to achieve the agreed development. internationally goals. "
