Indian govt announces free exam on 'cow science'

  • The 'cow science' exam will be free
  • The test aims to raise awareness about native cows among citizens
  • Successful candidates selected will subsequently receive awards and certificates.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India has announced a nationwide voluntary online test on "gau Vigyan" [cow science].

The free "Kamdhenu Gau-Vignyan Prachar-Prasar Exam" is an initiative of Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog (RKA), a government body created for the welfare of cows in February 2019. It is under the Ministry of Fisheries, Livestock, and Dairy of India.

According to Indian media reports, the exam aims to generate interest in the "indigenous cow and its benefits."

"To raise mass awareness of indigenous cows among young students and all other citizens, the RKA decided to conduct a national exam on cow science," said RKA President Vallabhbhai Katherine.

The government body prepared material on cow science that aims to promote curiosity among Indians about cows and motivate them to explore the potential and business opportunities that a cow can offer, she added.

This year, the annual test is scheduled for February 25. It will be conducted in four categories: (1) elementary level through grade 8, (2) secondary level from grade 9 to 12, (3) college level, and (4) general public.

The exam program and other reading materials are available on the RKA website. The exam would be objective and the questions would be "posed in such a way that there is no room for maneuver during the online exam."

"Results will be declared immediately on the RKA website. Certificates will be awarded to all. Successful meritorious candidates will receive awards and certificates afterward. Letters of thanks will be issued to all those who help organize this exam," the ministry said.

“Selected blogs, videos, and other reading material will be uploaded to the official website. Scientists, businessmen, Gau Sevaks, farmers, youth and women, as well as seniors, will actively work to make this mega event a great success, ”the ministry said.
