Sri Lanka announces new cricket premier league in August

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Monday that the country will resume high-level cricket starting next month with a new Premier League tournament.

SLC said the proposal for 23 Lanka Premier League (LPL) matches with five teams will start on August 28 and end on September 20. The matches will be played at four international venues on the island.

"More than 70 international players and 10 top-level coaches have already confirmed their availability to participate in this tournament together with the top national players in Sri Lanka," the board said in a statement.

The lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting September 19. UAE coronavirus rules require all visitors to isolate themselves for two weeks after arriving in the country.

Sri Lanka Cricket did not name any of the foreign stars who it says have agreed to play in the LPL. It also did not say whether Sri Lankan health authorities were making an exception to quarantine rules for visiting players.

Currently, everyone entering the island must be quarantined for two weeks in state-run centers, followed by another two weeks of self-quarantine.

The government had announced the reopening of the country's international airports to foreign tourists since August 1 but has since been postponed indefinitely amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Sri Lanka has reported more than 2,800 infections with at least 11 deaths from the virus since the first case, a Chinese tourist, tested positive on January 27.

The England team abruptly withdrew from its two-match test series against Sri Lanka on March 13 when the pandemic spread.

Since then, South Africa and Bangladesh have canceled their scheduled tours of Sri Lanka.
