The capital turns green, white before Independence Day

Islamabad: The federal capital has sported a green and white look with various booths displaying attractive colorful accessories since the countdown to the upcoming Independence Day celebrations began with just two days left.

A large number of Jashan-i-Azadi stalls with national flags, pennants, badges, green and white dresses, toys and other accessories installed in the main avenues, markets, and streets of the city have added charm to the beauty of the capital and revived the hustle and bustle after lifting the lockdown following the decline in COVID-19 cases. The preparations for the Independence Day party are in full swing with a number of young patriots, especially children, rushing to these stalls daily to buy these accessories, especially flags and pennants to decorate their vehicles and houses to finish their preparations.

"My children are very excited after staying at the door for many days due to the closing of the COVID-19 pandemic and now they plan to enjoy the Independence Day celebrations to the fullest by shopping for dresses and decorating," said Zahid Awan, who lives in the G8 sector.

"The stalls with green and white Jashan-i-Azadi accessories installed in different nooks and corners have not only added a charm to the beauty of the capital but have conveyed a message of patriotism to the citizens," he said while speaking with APP.

It has been noted that all booths this year were displaying Kashmiri flags to show solidarity and affection to the Kashmiri people living in Jammu and illegally occupied Kashmir by India. "Independence Day is the perfect time to show solidarity with the Kashmiri people who have been fighting for their right to self-determination for decades and enduring atrocities and grave human rights violations," said Professor Tahir, a university professor.

He said that the unwavering support shown by our nation to the Kashmiri people in Youm-i-Istesaal should also be expressed on Independence Day. Shagufta Shahid, a working woman, said: “We should not only let our children buy flags, pennants and other accessories to celebrate this day but tell them about the historical struggle of our national heroes and workers of the Pakistan Movement behind the creation of Pakistan and what we can contribute to make our country a better place ”.

She said the idea of planting trees on August 14 will make this day more meaningful and will help reduce the environmental hazards facing the country. Kamran Khan, a street vendor, said: “The occasion of Independence Day gives us the opportunity to earn a good amount by selling items of the color of the flag.

Most of our customers are young people and children who buy more things to decorate their dresses, vehicles, and homes ”. This year, marketers like me are hoping for good sales after lifting the lockdown, as young people seem more enthusiastic to prepare for Independence Day celebrations and then post selfies on social media, he said.

She said that the cost of the giant flags is up to Rs2,500 while the small and medium flags are sold from Rs500 to Rs1,000. The remaining items including toys, face masks, badges, and stickers sell for under Rs500. Every year on Independence Day, young people and children show more enthusiasm for celebrating this important occasion and their motivation comes from the variety of stalls displaying unique items to attract them.
