LAHORE: Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq announced Wednesday that he will step down as the head coach but will continue to serve as the head coach of the cricket team.
The former captain's announcement came after a year-long performance review and in light of the recently announced code of ethics, according to Geo News.
Misbah addressed a press conference at the Pakistan Cricket Board headquarters in Lahore, where he made the announcement.
The PCB had appointed him as head coach and selector in chief in September 2019 despite reservations from several top-tier players and experts.
"It is my decision to leave the position of head coach as it would be difficult for me to focus on training due to the upcoming international commitments of the cricket team," he said.
Commenting on the development, cricket expert Alia Rasheed said this is the right thing to do as it was a challenging task and Misbah made the right decision.
"Positive U-turn
Former cricketer and analyst Sikandar Bakht called it a positive U-turn and said Prime Minister Imran Khan must be very happy about it.
“It is said that wise people make U-turns and I think that, although late, he (Misbah) took the right step. We have been saying this for the last year. "
He also criticized PCB officials who had given Misbah dual responsibilities.
