‘Ramy’ becomes first Muslim American sitcom to bag an Emmy nomination

Ramy Youssef is hoping to throw light on more Muslim stories after 'Ramy' recognition

Ramy Youssef's Ramy show has become the first American Muslim sitcom to be nominated for the 2020 Emmy Awards, leaving the actor delighted by the feat.

The Egyptian-American co-creator of the Hulu series was nominated in the categories of Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Direction in a Comedy Series.

Speaking about the massive achievement, Youssef told The Hollywood Reporter that the sentiment was "surreal."

“I'm super grateful, he's definitely very surreal. It's great because really any nomination on this, and being able to get three, is simply representative of everyone who has worked so hard on the show. For me, even an acting nomination is a nomination for the entire show and for everyone who worked so hard on it, ”he said.

Regarding Ramy as the first American Muslim sitcom to be nominated for an Emmy, Youssef said: “It is really exciting because we are very specific. I think you look at our program, you realize in a good way that we are not even close to covering the entire Muslim experience. "

"For a program that only shows a small part of it to be recognized, I think that should mean that we are going to get many more Muslim stories with the green light because the umbrella of the Muslim experience is so vast: there are so many different groups, so many types of people ".

"There are so many more stories that could be told, so I'm excited by the bigger picture, one that doesn't even include me," he added.
