The Batman universe is expanding, with a television series set in the Gotham City Police Department that will explore corruption, streaming platform HBO Max said Friday.
HBO Max said the original drama series would be produced by Matt Reeves, director of the upcoming Warner Bros. movie The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader without special superpowers.
He said the series "would extend the world established in the film and further explore Gotham's myriad of compelling and complex characters."
Batman develops when the DC comic character is in his 30s and early in his life as a vigilante, Reeves said.
Filming for The Batman was halted in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic but is expected to resume in the UK in the coming weeks for its cinema premiere in October 2021.
Reeves said the television series was "an incredible opportunity, not only to expand the worldview I'm creating in the film but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford."
No release, title, or expected broadcast date was announced.
