LHC suspends PEMRA order on Channel 24 ban

The Lahore High Court has suspended the order of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMA) banning Channel 24 on Monday.

During the hearing, PEMRA's lawyer stated that the order to ban the channel was issued by the competent authority.

However, the bank asked the lawyer if the competent authority was larger than the court.

"The minutes of the meetings are due tomorrow, then the court will decide [on the matter]," the LHC said.

LHC judge Sajid Mahmood issued the order to lift the ban and adjourned the hearing on the case until Wednesday and asked the regulator to submit its response in the case.

The opposition demands an end to the prohibition of Channel 24

Shehbaz Sharif, in a letter to President Asad Qaiser, stated that, as an opposition representative, he demands that the Channel 24 ban be lifted immediately.

Sharif also demanded the immediate release of Jang-Geo editor-in-chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman.

The opposition leader in the National Assembly also asked President Qaiser to form a parliamentary committee to resolve issues related to the rule of law. He added that the committee must investigate the injustices that are committed in the media industry.

The PML-N President recommended that the parliamentary committee listen to the complaints of the media representatives and the organizations of journalists and offer suggestions in this regard.

"I hope they make a decision in view of democracy and the fourth pillar of the state, and above party affiliation and pressure from the prime minister," Shehbaz said in the letter. He added that people's voices should be heard, not muffled.
