US bans PIA's entry into airspace over 'fake' licences

The US Department of Transportation suspended Pakistan International Airline's special permit on Thursday, citing concerns about the flag carrier's security measures and the pilots' "suspicious licenses."

The authority, in a statement, said: "The PIA will not be able to operate its flights to the United States."

The US authority said the application of "all kinds of flights" operated by PIA has been banned.

The PIA spokesperson confirmed the ban, saying the national carrier had received an email about it.

"We will address the concerns of the United States," he said, adding that, hopefully, the issue of pilot licenses will be resolved through ongoing corrective measures within the airline.

The move comes a few days after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) suspended the national airline's permit for six months, the UK banned PIA flights from three of its airports, and Vietnam suspended all Pakistani pilots working in the country.

Similarly, the Malaysian aviation regulatory authority had announced the temporary suspension of pilots who hold Pakistani licenses and were employees of their national airlines.
