Latest News: Pakistan to achieve $150 million mango export target

 Pakistan is expected to achieve its mango export target of $ 150 million by the end of the 2020 season, contrary to the prediction that exports will be affected due to the epidemic.

According to a report released by Gwadar Pro on Thursday, the country has already exceeded its mango export target by 45,000 tons despite serious challenges stemming from the global COVID-19 outbreak.

Citing the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Traders Association (PFVA), the report stated that the country has so far exported 125,000 tons of mangoes, earning much-needed and valuable foreign exchange of $ 72 million, compared to the Crown-revised target of 85,000 tonnes for 2020. Previously, Pakistan recorded a record in the export of fruits and vegetables was 12.5 percent, amounting to $ 730 million in the fiscal year 2019-20, despite the global pandemic.

This is also the highest income in terms of generating foreign exchange. During the last year, the export of fruits increased by 3.8 percent, while vegetables reflected an increase in exports by 28 percent. The export of fruits reached $ 431.27 million, while the export of vegetables generated $ 30 million. The government made wise and timely decisions to especially improve mango exports this year through its unique marketing strategies and trade diplomacy.

Exporting Pakistani fruits and vegetables was nearly impossible due to the pandemic and the resulting lockdowns. However, exporters translated these challenges into opportunities by improving exports in this sector and adopting realistic strategies.

Pakistan International Airlines has granted discounted freight rates of up to 30 percent for mango exports to ease pressure amid the global shutdown due to COVID 19. To further boost mango exports, Pakistani embassies in several countries organized mango exhibitions, introducing Pakistani mangoes to the local population. Pakistan exports mangoes to 40 countries around the world, and by adopting careful planning and removing barriers that restrict exports, Pakistan can gain access to larger and higher value international markets.

Pakistan ranks sixth in the world in terms of mango production and fifth in terms of mango exports in the world, with a share of around 5 percent.
