American director David Fincher has a bone, or two, to choose from with the "betrayal" that Joaquin Phoenix's Joker showed towards the "mentally ill" community.

The director shared his sincere thoughts with The Telegraph during one of his most recent interviews and was even quoted as casting a shadow on the substandard quality of the Joker.

He explained, "No one would have thought I had a chance for huge success with Joker if The Dark Knight hadn't been as massive as it was."

During the course of his interview, the filmmaker also weighed Robert De Niro and the Phoenix Joker together, adding that: “I don't think anyone would have seen that material and thought: Yeah, let's take Travis Bickle [from Taxi Driver] and [The King of Comedy] Rupert Pupkin and mixes them up, then catches him in a betrayal of the mentally ill and takes him out for a billion dollars. "

He concluded by noting the studio's general thoughts regarding its future, stating: "The general opinion afterward among the studio types was, 'Our careers are over.' The fact that we made that movie in 1999 is still, in my opinion, a miracle."
